The “Record Temperatures” Con Trick

Posted on August 11, 2013 by Paul Homewood

We often hear the claim that bucket loads of new temperature records are being set in the USA. For instance, so far this year NOAA claim that there have been 7061 daily record highs, i.e. record temperatures for that particular day. Impressed? Well, not really. There are over 5000 stations across the nation that they monitor. In a given year, then, there will be about 2 million daily temperature recordings, so over a 100-year period, you would expect 20,000 daily records each year.

But how meaningful are these records anyway?

What is Political Correctness?

What is Political Correctness?

What is Political Correctness?

Political correctness is the removal of your right to an opinion. They want you shut up.

No matter what you said, they know what you were thinking. A thought crime. No matter how tangential the connotation, if you skirted the forbidden zone you are now a political enemy and you are done for. They’ll even go looking for that geographically vague, mythical land to find a hypothetical victim of your evil reference. And if the hypothetical victim is not too offended, they’ll persuade another to feel his pain.

Science Sundays with John Duffield: Bankrupting Physics

Posted on August 11, 2013 by John Duffield

Of course ozone isn’t brimstone. But the moral of the tale is that if you appoint a bunch of knights in shining armour to search for the Holy Grail, and treat them like heroes and pay them handsomely, you can guarantee that it will never be found.

Because if it is, the noble quest is over, and it’s back to the manor and poverty and obscurity. So if you ask them how it’s going, they’ll spin you a line and try to pull the wool over your eyes just like they pulled it over their own. That’s the message I got from Bankrupting Physics, by Alexander Unzicker and Sheilla Jones. I liked it. It says cosmology is relatively OK, but it rips into stuff like the holographic principle, which you probably expect. And then it rips into other physics, like the standard model, which you probably don’t.

researchers, outfoxed …

researchers, outfoxed …

researchers, outfoxed …

Here we go again, it must be ‘climate change’ says researchers from Murdoch University. Forgetting the fact that the climate Australia currently experiences hasn’t changed for over a thousand years at least, and not expected to soon except in their own minds, and foxes were only introduced with the European migration over the last 250 years or so.

Parasite distribution altering with climate

THE distribution and transmission of parasites in red foxes is shifting with climate change and altering disease risk factors, according to Murdoch University research. […]

Weaponized “Science”

Posted on August 10, 2013 by Jeff Condon

I don’t have much time today unfortunately, but there was a minor kerfuffel in the news about a study (a term very loosely used) which according to the media reporters (also loosely used) shows that Fox news watchers are being tricked by Fox into “distrust” of climate scientists. The study, which I read, is available on line but before you click on it, IT WILL COST YOU IQ POINTS! I accept no responsibility for neurological damage caused by individual failure to follow my warning.

New Accounting For Atmospheric CO2? New Study!

Posted on August 10, 2013 by suyts space

So, do we know all there is to know about Carbon Dioxide? Bonus question at the end of the post!!! Even within the confines of human knowledge, almost no one knows all that can be known about CO2. It’s simply humanity’s hubris that allows us to believe we do. For instance, this is fairly commonly known …..

Molar Mass:
44.0095 g

Mass Percent:
C 27.291 %; O 72.708 %

But, what about this?

What’s Going On Up There?

Posted on August 10, 2013 by Harold Ambler

When it was initially apparent that a period of mild cooling was taking place in the high Arctic one month ago, I decided to reach out to Walt Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Center. I wanted him to get on the record about what to me looked like a shift from years past. What at the start of our exchange was the longest period of days cooler than average in the DMI record has since grown from about 60 days to about 100.

Always affable, always reasonable, always intelligent, and yet somehow always alarmist at the same time, Walt was kind enough to oblige. Among the surprising pieces of his end of our e-mail exchange: His willingness to jump on the story that the North Pole cam was capturing something significant in terms of melting.

“Carbon dioxide involved but not determinative in 100,000 year glacial cycles”

Posted on August 10, 2013 by The k2p blog

We are still struggling to explain what initiates an ice age (glaciation) and what causes them to end and the ice sheets to withdraw giving the interglacials.

“Carbon dioxide involved but not determinative in 100,000 year glacial cycles”

That the Milankovitch cycles and variations of insolation are involved in the onset and retreat of glacial periods is clear but the “how” is still elusive. Now a new paper describes a model where the ice sheets and the mutual feedbacks with climate are considered.

Vote Against Smart Meters

Posted on August 9, 2013 by Stop Smart Meters Australia

Armchair activists: here’s your chance to make a difference, with just a few clicks of your fingers!

OurSay, in conjunction with Deakin University, is giving the public an opportunity to pose questions to Senate candidate and WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange.

The following question regarding smart meters is one of the contenders:

“Wireless smart meters breach people’s privacy, increase costs to the consumer, cause serious health problems, adversely affect pets, livestock, wildlife and bees, and damage homes and appliances. What do you believe is the real reason governments around the world are inflicting (wireless) smart meters on unwilling consumers and what will the Wikileaks Party do about smart meters, if elected?”

Each voter is given 7 votes to be used on any question(s) they choose. Julian Assange will be asked the top five voted questions on August 16th.

Climate begins at the 1950s

Climate begins at the 1950s

Climate begins at the 1950s

When someone would ask “Are heatwaves increasing?”, what would you answer? Probably something like “That’s common knowledge, we all know that!”. Sure, but why? “We hear it everywhere”.

I heard it many times before and had no doubt it was true. At first glance it seems straight forward and logical. When temperatures go up (global warming, you know), the frequency of extreme temperatures go up. It has been told that the frequency of heatwaves is unprecedented and even ramping up in the last years.

I hear around me that we now live in a more extreme world. In stead of just believing this story line, I wanted to see for myself. I came to realize that this data exist. We call extremes in temperatures “heatwaves” and “coldwaves”. Okay, heatwaves increase, but the problem started when I asked myself: “How much?”. The answer was not exactly what I expected it to be…
